Kathryn Blaze Baum is an award-winning investigative reporter with The Globe and Mail and the author of the instant national bestseller In Fertility: The Story of a Miracle and the Big Business Behind It. Since joining The Globe in 2013, she has probed systemic failures related to criminal justice, healthcare, immigration, labour law, food safety and child welfare.
Her years-long coverage of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women contributed to policy changes at the provincial and federal levels, particularly as it relates to the emergency placement of foster children. Baum’s noteworthy work also includes an investigation into a deadly listeria outbreak that revealed flaws within the Canadian food-safety system; a debunking of misleading U.S. data on fentanyl seizures at Canada’s border; an examination of the failures of Canada’s temporary foreign worker program during the COVID-19 pandemic; enterprising reporting on extreme weather and climate adaptation; a deeply reported first-hand account of her year-long recovery from a concussion; and coverage of major breaking news events, such as the 2013 Boston marathon bombing and the 2014 Moncton mass shooting.
Prior to joining The Globe, Kathryn was a reporter for The National Post and a Manhattan-based stringer for The New York Times.
Kathryn has won two National Newspaper Awards and has twice been a finalist for the prestigious Michener Award for public-service journalism. Kathryn hails from Winnipeg and lives in Toronto with her husband and three children.
